In yesterday’s post I discussed how Jane Tennison inspired some of our favorite tough woman cops today like Stella Gibson. Here is a list of some of the character attributes that the two women share:
- Both Jane Tennison and Stella Gibson are of a higher ranking than most of the males in their unit. They are ambitious.
- Jane and Stella are both Detective Superintendents who refuse to back down from difficult cases.
- Stella and Jane have one night stands with men who often are much younger or older than themselves. They are in charge of their own sexuality.
- Jane Tennison and Stella Gibson both buck horns with sexist bigoted men within their police unit.
- Stella Gibson and Jane Tennison are talented interrogators who know how to put together the pieces to solve a murder.
- Both female Detective Superintendents are “work alcoholics”.
- Jane and Stella can delve into the minds of killers.
- Stella Gibson and Jane Tennison can be tough which cause their co-workers to both respect and fear them.
- The women suffer the scrutiny of being investigated because of their intensity in getting to the truth in their cases.
- Jane Tennison and Stella Gibson are both stars of their show which are about solving murders. They are feminist complex female characters.
I recommended to my feminist readers to watch both Prime Suspect and The Fall.
(Sorry about the Subtitles)
The PERFECT choice! !!!

I think Gillian Anderson should play Kaye Scarpetta. If Helen Mirren were younger she could have too but there’s plenty more for her. If Hollywood lets women over a certain age ACT!

Helen Mirren is thankfully so great that she is still acting in loads of stuff. But your right it seems in Hollywood unless your Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith or Meryl Streep or a couple of other people you don’t get hired after a certain age.

And it’s a crying shame because women get better with age. I’m so glad you’re writing all this it would make a fantastic female themed polemic on women depicted in the media I’m finding it fascinating! Well done!♡

Thank you. And I agree. I actually think Gillian Anderson is a prime example. I love her in The X Files, but I think she has gotten better and better since then.

Definitely! I’m so ridiculously excited about the files ‘re boot even though her character is always relegated behind the boys. Like it when a woman’s role isn’t second to a man’s. When she’s given a fully fleshed role she fills it, too often women are second but they are mesmerizing when first like the actress in Babettes Feast and the brilliant Francis Mcdormand.

Though I think Dana Scully is shown to be equal to Fox Mulder in The X Files. The show could not work without both of them.
